Scenic train rides are a pleasure for travelers, and can be greatly enhanced by a cold, snowy atmosphere. With the holiday season coming up and temperatures getting lower, this list shows off a few can't-miss winter train rides that are sure to impress.

Bernina Express

This train that runs through the heart of the Alps on journeys from Switzerland to Italy showcases jagged peaks, stunning glaciers and frozen lakes. It offers some of the best views in Europe and the snowy landscape makes the sight even more dramatic.

The highlight of the ride is the Bernina Pass, which sits over 7,000 feet above sea level and features views of snow-capped mountain peaks and stunning snowfields. The train’s panoramic windows make the views easy to enjoy for all travelers from their warm seats. For travelers looking for a scenic train ride, this bright red train is possibly the best you can get.

Amtrak California Zephyr

This long route runs between Chicago and San Francisco and cuts straight through the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada, two remarkable mountain ranges, especially in the winter. This three-day adventure features views of snow-capped mountains, rivers, canyons, deserts, cities and mountain towns.

The blanket of snow that is present in the winter makes this trip magical, and gives travelers a look into the most scenic landscapes in the U.S. This train is particularly special, as it allows guests to see places that would be otherwise hard to reach. The Zephyr is a fantastic option for those interested in an immersive experience with breathtaking views.

VIA Rail – The Canadian

Another impressive train ride in the winter is The Canadian. This train travels between Vancouver and Toronto and is a perfect trip for seeing the beautiful landscapes Canada has to offer. Forests, mountains and frozen lakes are all staples of this 4-day cross-country trip.

This peaceful ride gives a great view of the Canadian Rockies, which look majestic in the winter. This train is also less crowded in the winter, making it a perfect time to jump on and see Canada.
