As Canadians gear up to celebrate Canada Day, a new survey suggests many would be more likely to explore their own country—if it didn’t cost so much.

A recent poll conducted by Lightspeed Commerce reveals that over half of Canadians would travel more within Canada if costs were subsidized by the government.

“Canadians are making a definitive statement about where, and how they choose to spend their money—and travel is no exception,” said Lightspeed CEO Dax Dasilva.

“More than half of Canadians surveyed believe that it’s important to support the local travel economy, and with the rollout of the Canada Strong travel pass, it is now more convenient and accessible than ever.

"It’s encouraging to see Canadians find new passions and opportunities to support our local businesses, and businesses should find opportunities to showcase their Canadian pride, and roots, this coming Canada Day.”

The survey also highlights a shift in national travel habits:

  • 63% of Canadians are planning a domestic vacation this year.
  • 66% say they’re uncomfortable travelling to the U.S. due to political concerns.
  • 75% are paying close attention to tariff-related news, letting it guide their travel decisions.

The data suggests that Canada’s rising domestic tourism trend isn’t just about saving money—it’s about values, too.

Supporting Canadian businesses, staying closer to home, and making conscious travel decisions are all playing a role in how Canadians are choosing to spend their summer.
