Belize Travel Guide

A trip to Belize, one of Central America’s top tourist destinations, has something for everyone, whether you’re planning a honeymoon or a diving trip.

If you’re an avid adventurer or looking for a relaxing, beach holiday destination, we highly recommend a trip to Belize. Find out everything you need to know and more here!

Taxis

Moving around the country is fairly easy. You will be able to find taxis to take you around pretty easily. But we do recommend only making use of licensed taxis, which are recognizable by their green license plates.

Buses

Buses are an easy mode of transport to explore Belize. There are express buses to get in and around the main towns. If you’re looking to explore the more rural towns, then you may have to plan ahead, as the local buses in smaller towns run fewer times a day.

Bicycles

If you’re slightly more adventurous then you might consider renting a bicycle to get around Belize. Of course it may not be as comfortable as say a car, or bus, but it sure is an exciting way to sightsee and explore the smaller towns in Belize.

Belize is a small, Central American country with loads to offer. Aside from unparalleled and diverse natural beauty, the country has a rich history and culture. From visiting Mayan ruins to touring untouched ancient caves, you’re in for a treat. So, if you’re planning a trip to Belize, there is a list of things we would recommend you do.

Important Things To Know

Currency

The official currency in Belize is the Belize Dollar. However, US Dollars are accepted in Belize.

So if you’re traveling from the U.S., you won’t have to trade in your US Dollars, making travel just that much easier.

National Languages

Since Belize was a former British colony (formerly British Honduras), English has remained the primary language in the country.

However, Belize is a melting pot of culture and language, with many locals being multilingual. There are about ten languages spoken in Belize, including Creole, Spanish, as well as Mayan languages such as Q'eqchi' Maya and Yucatec Mayan. There’s even an African-based language called Garifuna.

Climate And Weather

Belize’s lush rainforests paint the perfect picture of a tropical climate. The rainy season runs from May until October, while the sunny, dry season runs from November to April.

The warmest month of the year is generally August, with the average temperature reaching around 87°F. The coolest time of the year is usually January, with average temperatures reaching around 75°F.

May to November is the rainy season, with possible hurricanes.

  • San Ignacio is considered the cultural hub of the Cayo District. From Mayan ruins nearby, to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest, not to mention the town center itself, it’s a beautiful town that we definitely recommend visiting.
  • If art, food and colorful scenery is what you’re after, then a stop in San Pedro is a must! You’ll be able to get around the Main Street without a car or taxi, as everything is within walking distance. We recommend booking a trip to see the Belize Barrier Reef while you’re in San Pedro, it’s well worth it.
  • For all the culture aficionados, we recommend a stop in Orange Walk Town. Another town easily explored on foot, here we recommend a visit to Banquitas House of Culture, a museum known to have colorful exhibits. This is a town that’s colorful and exciting, sure to bring out the fun kid in you. You may also want to add a trip to Cuello, the nearby Mayan ruins that won’t take an entire day to explore, so it’s perfect for a day trip.
  • Punta Gorda Town is a seaport and fishing town in Belize. You may get to see fishermen displaying their catches of the day on the beachfront, or even catch a drumming lesson at the Warasa Garifuna Drum School. Definitely something we recommend you try!
