According to the Ministry of Tourism in Tulum, hotel guests staying at Tulum Hotel Association properties in the near future may be required to sign an informational document stating that they understand that buying and consuming drugs while in Mexico is illegal as an effort to stop illegal drug use by travelers.

According to Riviera Maya News, the notice has yet to be approved, but if so, it would serve as an effort to curb drug use by tourists in the town, something that has been an issue for years.

The document is a single-page document written in both English and Spanish and will be presented to travelers upon check-in at their hotel. The page would then be signed at the bottom by the traveler acknowledging that drug use is illegal in Mexico and that they understand the consequences of breaking the law.

The notice states: “Drugs in Mexico are illegal. Don’t be misled into thinking that purchase or use is allowed or tolerated. The purchase of illicit drugs in Mexico is a crime punishable by imprisonment. Don’t put yourself at risk. Drug dealers of beaches and nightclubs will get you into trouble. They are not your friends, they are criminals. This is an informative document that must be signed by the visitor as confirmation of being aware of the information contained therein.”

Tulum Hotel Association’s Director, Carla Patricia Andrade Piedras, told Riviera Maya News that, “it is a format that we suggest be integrated into the hotel check-in process. It is a formal notification that in Mexico the consumption of these substances is illegal.”

The new proposed notice comes following last week's debut of the first routes from the U.S. to Tulum's newly opened airport, Aeropuerto Internacional de Tulum Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Spirit, American, United and JetBlue are only four of the major airlines offering new routes to the growing destination.
