The Philippines, Taiwan and China are being battered by Super Typhoon Ragasa, with thousands of people in the Philippines and Taiwan being evacuated and several Asian airports reporting hundreds of delays and cancellations as the slow-moving system threatens millions.

According to the Associated Press, the tropical typhoon has sustained winds of 134 mph with wind gusts of up to 183 mph, but is moving incredibly slowly. It hit Panuitan, an island off the Cagayan province in the Philippines, on Monday, traveling west and passing Taiwan and Hong Kong before making landfall on Mainland China today, September 24.

Several places in the Philippines were reporting high winds and power outages, and the President suspended government work and all classes, with those in the Cagayan province were evacuated.

In Taiwan, several coastal areas were closed, 7,000 people were evacuated due to flooding, and ferry services and scheduled flights to other islands were also canceled.

China is bracing for impact, with officials in Shenzhen reporting evacuating roughly 400,000 people in flood-prone regions. Shenzhen’s airport also halted all flights.

Flights in Hong Kong will be reduced for the time being, too. Over 500 cancellations are expected from Cathay Pacific Airways alone, which is Hong Kong’s flag carrier.

According to FlightAware, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX) are the three top airports for delays and cancellations, reporting a combined 652 total cancellations Wednesday morning and 487 delays. Several other area airports are also reporting delays and cancellations, including in Macao.

Travelers heading to or through these airports are advised to check with their airline about their flight status, visit the airport’s website to learn about any additional advisories and to stay updated on the weather conditions.
