Southwest Airlines will debut its highly anticipated new-look in-flight experience this fall.
The low-cost carrier announced that the Boeing MAX 8 aircraft—tail number N8972S—is expected to enter service on Thursday, October 16, introducing an updated cabin design that features new seats made by RECARO, larger overhead bins and in-seat charging options.
Southwest's transformation will also include new lighting, revamped uniforms and elevated snack options in addition to extra legroom for select seats.
Most significantly, the airline will begin offering free in-flight Wi-Fi to all Rapid Rewards Members beginning October 24.
Southwest said the new RECARO R2 seats will be installed on all new aircraft deliveries, in addition to plans to retrofit current Boeing 737-800s in the coming months.
The RECARO Exra Legroom (ELR) seats will stand out from the rest with a sky blue sunray design that is visible from both the front and back. What's more, when assigned seating takes effect on January 27, 2026, these passengers will enjoy access to Boarding Groups 1 or 2 as well as complimentary premium beverages and enhanced snack options such as Wonderful Pistachios No Shells.
Regardless of seat, Southwest travelers can also look forward to USB-A and USB-C ports on each seatback.
The carrier will update its fleet, modernizing Boeing 737-700s well into 2027. That same year, customers can expect to notice Southwest employees donning new uniforms.
