According to the U.S. Embassy in Peru, the government has declared a 30-day state of emergency in Lima and Callao starting October 22, 2025, in response to rising security concerns. During this period, armed forces will support local police, who have authority to restrict movement and assembly.

Essential Safety Measures

The Embassy advises visitors to remain vigilant and exercise heightened caution throughout the emergency period. Security forces may request identification documents at any time—carrying your passport is mandatory under Peruvian law.

Avoid displaying wealth such as expensive jewelry or watches, and stay alert in tourist areas, banks and ATMs. The embassy also recommends keeping a low profile and avoiding crowds whenever possible.

The embassy also provided this critical reminder: Never physically resist if confronted during a robbery attempt. Your safety is paramount—possessions can be replaced.

Travelers should maintain constant situational awareness and follow all instructions from local officials. Stay informed by monitoring the U.S. Embassy website (pe.usembassy.gov) for the latest updates and alerts.
