While New Orleans may not see snow-capped roofs or frozen lakes, the Crescent City transforms into a unique winter wonderland during the holiday season. From twinkling lights adorning centuries-old oak trees to the aroma of Creole delicacies wafting through the air, New Orleans offers visitors a magical holiday experience

Réveillon: A Taste of Tradition

One of the city's most cherished holiday traditions is the Réveillon dinner. Dating back to the mid-1800s, this Creole custom originally celebrated the start of Christmas with a lavish family meal after midnight mass. Today, the tradition lives on in a modern form, with the city's finest restaurants offering decadent four-course holiday menus. For those who prefer their festivities in liquid form, local bartenders have crafted both classic and original cocktails to toast the season, allowing visitors to experience Réveillon one sip at a time.

Illuminating Experiences

No holiday visit to New Orleans is complete without experiencing the Celebration in the Oaks. From November 29, 2024, to January 3, 2025, City Park becomes a mesmerizing spectacle as hundreds of thousands of lights adorn the park's majestic live oak trees. This dazzling display is renowned as one of the most spectacular holiday light festivals in the nation.

For a truly unique New Orleans tradition, venture out to the Mississippi River levees on Christmas Eve. As the sun sets, massive bonfires are lit atop the levees, creating a breathtaking display that, according to local lore, guides Papa Noel on his journey.

Historic Homes and Festive Parades

The holidays offer a rare opportunity to peek inside some of New Orleans' most beautiful historic homes. Holiday home tours allow visitors to admire festive decorations and one-of-a-kind architecture in private residences across the city.

The season also brings the joy of parades to the streets. The Children's Hospital parade features more than 20 custom-designed, holiday-themed floats, complete with animatronic props, intelligent lighting systems and high-flying helium balloons. Starting at the French Market, the parade winds through the French Quarter and downtown, ending at Lafayette Square.

A Shopper's Paradise

Holiday shopping in New Orleans is an experience unto itself. Whether browsing charming boutiques along the streetcar line or exploring local markets, visitors will find unique gifts that capture the spirit of the city.

Melodies of the Season

Music is the heartbeat of New Orleans, and the holiday season is no exception. Festive concerts at St. Louis Cathedral and Ashé Powerhouse Theater provide the perfect soundtrack to the season, blending traditional carols with the city's signature jazz flair.

Ring in the New Year, NOLA Style

As the year draws to a close, New Orleans pulls out all the stops. Revelers gather in Jackson Square for a spectacular New Year's Eve celebration, while football fans gear up for the Sugar Bowl at the iconic Superdome.

For travel professionals looking to experience the holiday magic firsthand, New Orleans & Company is hosting a special Travel Advisor Holiday FAM throughout December 2024. This program offers exclusive access to discounted hotel rates and a VIP pass for tours and attractions, providing an unparalleled opportunity to discover the city's festive charm.
