What comes to mind when you think of Malaysia?
I could be wrong, but my guess is that for most people reading this, the answer is: not much.
With neighbors like Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia and a name that sorta sounds like a continent, Malaysia gets overlooked too often.
Well, I'm a big fan, and since I just returned from another wonderful visit, it's my duty to help fill in a few of those blanks and explain why I believe it deserves a place on your or your client's radar when they are looking to take a trip to exotic Southeast Asia.

Malaysia Is Modern
The first thing you'll probably notice arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport is that Malaysia is like, really nice. Well, the waterfall and mini-jungle inside the airport might be the first thing you notice, but you know what I mean. Then, you'll get on the express train into the capital city (called KL by locals) and be impressed again. And yet again on the railways, highways, and sparkling shopping malls in KL. If you like modern skyscrapers, you're in luck too: the Petronas Towers (the world's largest twin buildings since their opening in 1993) are located here as is the recently opened Merdeka 118, currently the world's second tallest building.
The excellent infrastructure means that Malaysia is an easy place to travel, and as a bonus for Americans, as a result of its colonial connection to Britain, English is widely spoken. Oh yeah, it's also super safe, too.

But Rich in History, Too
For every shimmering structure stretching for the clouds and slick cocktail bar, you'll find heaps of heritage, too. Cities like Malacca, Ipoh and Georgetown on the island of Penang are renowned for their historic, culture-filled streets and sensational foodie treats.
In addition, you'll find temples, mosques, churches, museums and cultural sights all over the nation that tell the story of its diverse population and unique history.

The Food Is Fantastic
Perhaps the greatest symbol of Malaysia's melting pot population and culture of native Malay alongside Chinese and Indian influences, the food here is absolutely to die for, offering the chance to sample a delicious range of culinary traditions in one country.
From skewers of satay served up streetside that will knock your socks off to bowls of rich & creamy laksa "soup" at mom & pop restaurants to the national dish nasi lemak (a bold and flavorful breakfast starring rice, chicken, sambal sauce and lots of other tasty bits), if you're a food lover, you’ll be in heaven.

It’s an Affordable Tropical Escape
Located near the equator, Malaysia is warm & steamy all year round, making for a perfect getaway when things get frosty at home. The nation is home to a huge stretch of coastline and islands like Langkawi, Tioman and Redang known for dreamy beaches.
Malaysia is also on an elite level when it comes to biodiversity with large expanses of jungle and wildlife, with the most famous of the latter being orangutans.
All of this and it's easy on the wallet. Yes, a trip to Malaysia won't break the bank as the nation offers incredible value on hotels, transportation and food compared to some of its neighbors.
It Offers Off the Beaten Path Street Cred
While The White Lotus and Instagram send the masses to Thailand, Malaysia just hangs out under the radar. There's something to be said for doing something just slightly different and going to Malaysia will tick that box for sure.
Trust me, you won't miss out on any of the magic of Southeast Asia in Malaysia, and you're bound to come home a raving fan like I am.
